___Anniversaries
___ Larry Embry recently celebrated 30 years as pastor of Calvary Church in Brenham. The deacon body presented him with a Bible; his wife, Mary, was given a floral arrangement; and the deacon body sponsored a luncheon in their honor.
___ Dan Gibbs celebrated five years as minister of music at First Church in Monahans Oct. 1.

FAITH MEMORIAL CHURCH in Houston recently honored Faye Mathis, the church's only remaining charter member, for her 50 years of service as organist. She is the widow of Lamar Mathis, who served as pastor for 54 years. She is bus director of the church's bus ministry and an adult Sunday School teacher in addition to being the church's organist. ___ First Church in Hereford will celebrate its 100th anniversary Oct. 16-17. A tasting bee and visitation will be held at noon Saturday. ___ Broyles Chapel Church in Palestine will celebrate its 60th anniversary Oct. 17.
___ First Church of Center Point will celebrate its 125th anniversary Oct. 17 with homecoming services and a luncheon. The services will include a presentation of the church's history, recognition of former staff members and special music. Bob Schmeltekopf, Hill Country Area director of missions, will be the keynote speaker for the morning service and will present the church with a certificate of recognition. ___ Emily Fisher was recognized by First Church in Hamshire for 40 years of perfect attendance in Sunday School Sept. 26. She also served as Sunday School secretary and church treasurer during that time.
___ Cliff Temple Church of Dallas will be part of the Oak Cliff Tour of Homes Oct. 16-17. The church also is due to receive a state historical marker during the month to commemorate the church's 100 years of ministry. Glen Schmucker is pastor.

___Deaths
___ Ed Stewart, 71, Sept. 8 in Temple. Stewart was pastor emeritus of First Church in Temple, where he was pastor from 1971 until 1991. Other pastorates included Gillespie Church in Munday, First Church in Bridgeport, First Church in Galena Park and Country Estates in Midwest City, Okla. He is survived by his wife, Nola; son, Edwin; daughters, Donna, Janice and Kathy; and four grandchildren.
___ Dorothie Owens, 75, Sept. 30 in Amarillo. Owens, a School of music faculty member at Hardin-Simmons University from 1967 until 1978, was killed in an auto accident. She is survived by her husband, Bill, who was injured; and sons, William, Barry and Edwin.
