Texas chaplain introduces Bosnia peacekeepers to Prince of Peace

___CAMP DOBOL, Bosnia--A Texas Baptist chaplain enjoyed multi-dimensional ministry while serving with U.S. peacekeepers in the troubled Eastern European nation of Bosnia.
 ___"The highlights were seeing soldiers that had no faith come to faith in Christ," he explained shortly before he left Bosnia in late September. "It was gratifying to see soldiers who had wandered away from God return and have them see how important spiritual matters were to them."
___As soldiers committed their lives to Christ or renewed their faith, many expressed an interest to be baptized. Norwood--whose chapel facility lacked running water, let alone a baptistery--then had to improvise.
___So the graduate of Howard Payne University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary made a sketch for a portable baptistery to be situated in front of the chapel. Army civilian contractors working off Norwood's design built it.

Lone Star volunteers
aren't alone in missions

___Twice as many volunteers served in Texas Partnerships mission trips in the past year than did the year before, according to director Don Sewell.
___A greater variety of service opportunities and a church-directed approach combined to increase the number of Texas Baptist volunteers from about 600 to more than 1,200, Sewell explained.
___About one-fourth of the total number of volunteers served in the first year of Texas Baptists' partnership with Baptists in Germany. "We have 27 projects going in Germany alone," Sewell said.

Baptists, Catholics
seek understanding

___WASHINGTON (ABP)--Sixteen U.S. Catholic and Southern Baptist officials released a statement Sept. 23 describing where the two faiths agree--and disagree--about the Bible.
___One Catholic participant said the report would help dispel erroneous perceptions that Southern Baptists and Catholics have of each other.
___"We're the two largest Christian denominations in the United States," said Jeffrey Gros, associate director of the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Religious Affairs. "To say together how we talk about one another and about our common Bible is important progress."
