Baylor School of Nursing
receives $13 million gift
___DALLAS--Baylor School of Nursing announced a $13 million gift from Tyler businesswoman Louise Herrington Ornelas Nov. 10.
___This is the third-largest gift from an individual ever received by Baylor University, school officials said.
___In honor of the gift, the Dallas nursing school will be renamed the Louise Herrington School of Nursing.
___"This very substantial gift from Mrs. Ornelas ensures that the Baylor School of Nursing, already widely known for its quality, will be able to further expand its influence in nursing education and prepare future generations of health care professionals," said Baylor University President Robert Sloan.
___Ornelas is co-founder of TCA Cable Inc. of Tyler. A recipient of the prestigious Horatio Alger Award, she has developed a reputation as a caring volunteer. In 1989, she was named Volunteer of the Year in Tyler. She also received Baylor University's Herbert Reynolds Exemplary Service Award in 1996.
___Ornelas and her husband, Joseph, are members of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. She is the mother of five children, three of whom are Baylor University graduates. Three of her grandchildren also are Baylor graduates, two from the School of Nursing.
___Baylor's nursing school was established in 1909 as a diploma program within Baylor Hospital, which is now Baylor Medical Center, and in 1950 became one of six degree-granting schools of the university. The school is one of the oldest baccalaureate nursing programs in the United States.
___Ornelas' gift will be used as endowment for the nursing school.
