honors Anders, nears goal
___DALLAS--The T.B. Maston Foundation honored Sarah Frances Anders Nov. 5 with the Christian Ethics Distinguished Service Award and announced reaching $615,000 toward establishing an endowed chair of Christian ethics at Hardin-Simmons University's Logdson School of Theology.
___Anders has "lived a life which has reflected the values and characteristics for which Dr. Maston stood," said Weston Ware, chairman of the Maston Foundation. "As a layperson, she has a distinguished record of service to her church, denomination and to her community."
___In her remarks at the banquet, Anders explained that the late Maston, long-time professor of Christian ethics at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, had been one of several "gentle nudgers" in her life who had encouraged her to continue writing and research.
___Anders recently retired as chair of the sociology department at Louisiana College in Pineville, La. She is a nationally recognized author and researcher on women's and family issues. She currently serves as moderator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
___Lanny Hall, president of Hardin-Simmons University, announced at the banquet progress on a three-year collaboration between the university and the Maston Foundation to establish the chair of Christian ethics. The fund-raising goal is $750,000.
___"The Maston Foundation is thrilled that the collaborative effort of the foundation and Hardin-Simmons University to fund a chair of Christian ethics in the Logsdon School of Theology will certainly be accomplished in the year 2000," Ware said in response. "Hall's announcement of $615,000 of the $750,000 goal is wonderful news for those of us who want to honor Dr. Maston's memory and who recognize the importance of Christian ethics in our modern world."
___Guest speaker at the annual banquet was Carolyn Ann Knight, academic director and assistant professor of homiletics at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta.
