BGCT affirms 1963 version
of Baptist Faith & Message

___EL PASO--Texas Baptists will not go along with changes to the Baptist Faith & Message enacted by the Southern Baptist Convention.
___By an overwhelming majority, messengers to the annual session of the Baptist General Convention of Texas voted Nov. 9 to make the 1963 Baptist Faith & Message the "unifying statement of our common faith and practice."
___That action excludes from Texas Baptists' doctrinal statement a controversial addition on family adopted by the SBC in 1998 as well as further changes expected to be enacted by the SBC next June.

___EL PASO--The eyes of Texas Baptists were upon Bill Pinson throughout the 1999 annual session of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, his last as the convention's executive director.
___Pinson, who has been the convention's staff leader since 1983, will retire at the end of January.

Amendment would open door
for out-of-state churches

___EL PASO--Texas Baptists came one step closer to opening their state convention to churches from other states Nov. 9 with approval of the first of two required readings of a proposed constitutional amendment.
___The amendment, suggested by Phil Lineberger of Williams Trace Baptist Church in Sugar Land, would change a small piece of wording in Article 8, Section 1 of the constitution. That article, which explains how the governing boards of BGCT agencies and institutions are elected, currently requires trustees to be "active members of cooperating Baptist churches in the state of Texas."
___Lineberger's amendment would change the requirement for trustees to be "active members of cooperating Baptist General Convention of Texas churches."

Committees assigned to study seminaries, mission agencies

___EL PASO--In the coming year, Texas Baptists will undertake intensive studies of the mission-sending agencies and theological seminaries they fund.
___In addition, the convention's officers have been asked to consider simplifying the five missions funding options churches currently must choose from when sending Cooperative Program gifts through the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
