___bluebull Patterson and Jewish leaders at impasse. An impasse has been reached in the offer of Southern Baptist Convention President Paige Patterson to meet with six Jewish leaders who charged the SBC with "deception" in evangelistic outreach to Jews, particularly in regard to the SBC's support of the Messianic Jewish movement. Patterson had proposed a day-long conference with eight Jewish leaders and eight Southern Baptists, including two Messianic Jews. That proposal was unacceptable to Gedale Horowitz, president of the New York-based Jewish Community Relations Council.
___bluebull Netherton to Carson-Newman. Samford University Provost James Netherton was unanimously elected Dec. 2 as the 21st president of Carson-Newman College. Netherton previously was vice president and chief operating officer of Baylor University.
___bluebull Pierce to Baptists Today. John Pierce, managing editor of the Georgia Christian Index, has been named editor of Baptists Today, a national moderate Baptist newspaper based in Macon, Ga. He follows former Texas pastor Bob Ballance, who left the post after one year in a dispute over editorial control. Before joining the Index staff in 1994, Pierce was Baptist campus minister at Georgia Tech University in Atlanta.
