Southwestern distributes
literature critical of BGCT

___FORT WORTH--Protests by a Wichita Falls layman resulted in classroom distribution of controversial materials sharply criticizing the Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission and the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
___Seminary administrators gave the materials to three professors to distribute this month after a Baptist General Convention of Texas employee lectured in those professors' classes.
___Phil Strickland, director of the Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission, spoke to five classes at Southwestern Seminary Nov. 2 on "Keeping Your Church Out of Court." As part of his presentation, he described both appropriate political action and unacceptable political involvement by churches.

Patterson predicts SBC will split
___RALEIGH, N.C. (RNS)--Southern Baptist Convention President Paige Patterson has predicted that some kind of division is in the offing for the nation's largest Protestant denomination, but he expects less than one-tenth of SBC churches actually will depart.
___"Inevitably, there will come a divide in what is today known as the Southern Baptist Convention," Patterson predicted in an article he wrote for the millennial issue of the Biblical Recorder, the news journal of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. "No one knows exactly what form that will take."
___Patterson said a possible result could be an entity comprised of churches affiliated with the moderate Cooperative Baptist Fellowship or "churches desiring greater allowance for diversity in doctrinal and ethical matters and reacting in part out of disenchantment with certain conservative leadership."

Latvia bestows medal
on Texas Baptist man

___NACOGDOCHES--Carlos Gruber left Latvia with his family when he was 13. But it was his work on behalf of Latvians while he was living in America that earned him Latvia's three-star decoration more than 75 years later.
___The president of Latvia presented the award, which is equivalent to the Congressional Medal of Honor, to Gruber, a member of First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, in a ceremony in November. The Baptist convention in Latvia recommended Gruber for the award.
