___ Wayland names registrar. Stan DeMerritt has been named registrar at Wayland Baptist University. He previously was registrar at Plainview High School and associate registrar at Wayland.
___ Williams honored at DBU. Mike Williams, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and associate professor of history at Dallas Baptist University, has been named professor of the year at the school and has been nominated for consideration in the annual Piper Award competition. The latter award is given each year to 10 Texas university professors by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation of San Antonio.

___ Parker dies. Bobby Parker, president emeritus of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, died in his home Dec. 16 after a long illness. Parker, 74, served as president of the university from 1971-1991. He guided the school during its transition from a female-only institution to a coeducational campus. A memorial service was held Dec. 20 at First Baptist Church of Belton. Parker is survived by his wife, Marietta, and two sons, Bobby Jr. and Mark.
___ Howard Payne develops leadership program. A new "Servant-Centered Leadership Program" will be launched at Howard Payne University next spring. Participants will be selected from a pool of applicants, and those chosen will work through a series of individual and group activities to build leadership skills.
___ Baylor prof contributes to Science article. Baylor University religion professor Dan McGee is co-author of an article on the ethical issues of genetic manipulation that appears in the Dec. 10 issue of Science magazine. The article is titled "Ethical Considerations in Synthesizing a Minimal Genome."
___ Baylor to close Ennis hospital. Baylor Health Care System has announced that it will cease operation of Baylor Medical Center-Ellis County as of Jan. 31. Baylor officials said continued operation of the hospital, located in Ennis, is not economically feasible.
___ HSU prof writes for doctors and nurses. Joe Alcorta, professor of Spanish and coordinator of minority relations at Hardin-Simmons University, has written a new pocket-size book called "Essential Spanish for Doctors and Nurses." The $5 volume was printed by the university.
