President, East Texas Baptist University

___The history of ETBU is rich in its continued relationship with Texas Baptists. Chartered in 1912, the foundation of the university was laid by East Texas Baptists under the leadership of W.T. Tardy, pastor of First Baptist Church in Marshall, who was the founding trustee.
___During these 87 years, we have trained countless Baptist pastors, missionaries, teachers, businessmen and professionals to enter their fields and serve as Christian professionals.
___That heritage lives on today. At East Texas Baptist Univer-sity, 73 percent of our students are Baptists, and 70 percent of the faculty are Baptists, as well.
___Since 1915, our ministry students have served regional Baptist churches as youth ministers, music leaders, Sunday School teachers and provided other assistance to support Baptist churches.
___Our relationship with the Baptist General Convention of Texas is strong. We receive approximately 10 percent of our $16 million annual budget from the BGCT, and we are grateful to Texas Baptists for their continued support of East Texas Baptist University through direct gifts and also through the Cooperative Program, the convention's unified budget.
___The Baptist General Convention of Texas also approves our 45 trustees. The men and women who serve in governance roles at East Texas Baptist University are members of Baptist churches that give to the Cooperative Program.
___Religion continues to be one of the largest majors on campus, and we are pleased to report that our university has 312 students that have been certified by their Baptist churches to be recipients of the ministerial tuition aid program, the largest number of any Baptist college in Texas.
___In the summer of 1999, we had more than 125 students on the mission field, serving as representatives of Texas Baptists all over our state, nation and around the world.
___The Baptist Student Ministry at East Texas Baptist University is one of the strongest in the state, with 29 ministries and a student-led service each Tuesday night to worship and praise the Lord.
___East Texas Baptist University is proud of its Baptist heritage, and although the past 87 years have been a time of wonderful growth and development, the best is yet to come. Our university is entering the new millennium with a campus that is prepared to serve our students through technology, excellent academic programs and a continued spiritual emphasis working together with Texas Baptists to accomplish Gods purposes today and in the future.
