Scholarship program blesses generations
___The holiday season is a time to celebrate the birth of our Savior.
___As a Christ-centered university, it also is time for us to reflect and give thanks. We have been blessed in so many ways, thanks to the love and commitment of our Texas Baptist family.

___Houston Baptist University also has been blessed with a magnificent endowed scholarship program.
___The collection of scholarship plaques memorializing the donors is an outstanding campus landmark. It is impressive to gaze at the bronze images of these donors and honorees, to read the inscriptions describing their legacy and to know the sacrifices that were made through their commitment to Christian education.
___When you stop to realize that one plaque can represent many lives and multiple scholarships now and far into the future, it makes the scholarship endowment even more gratifying.
___We know we are truly blessed because these aren't just names and faces carved on a wall. We now have alumni recipients who are reciprocating by investing in the lives of students--just as early donors invested in the lives of young people some 30-plus years ago, when Gilbert Turner helped to establish the endowed scholarship program at HBU.
___The many donors--churches, corporations, alumni, friends of the university and foundations--make the 300-plus scholarships possible. Currently, 197 students have been awarded $696,626 for the 1999-2000 academic year.
___These students have the opportunity to experience academic excellence and to interact on a personal level with their fellow students and outstanding faculty in a Christ-centered environment.
___Donors in the endowed scholarship program have an exceptional opportunity to affect not only the university but also an individual student.
___The students are continually blessed through the gifts as they continue their education and grow in knowledge, and the donors are blessed as they see the impact their gifts have on a specific scholar.
___"It was our hope in giving our scholarships that the students whose lives were touched by our gift would in turn go on to affect other people's lives. Our scholars have become doctors, nurses, teachers and music directors. They are helping others, making good and trusting in the Lord," said Ruth Coulson, who along with her husband, Bennett, have given four scholarships to the program at HBU.
___As we close this year and witness the end of the millennium, I hope you will join me in thanking all of those special friends who have made Christian education a priority and thereby providing a blessing for our future. May God bless you!
