___UMHB has just been named in The Templeton Guide: Colleges that Encourage Character Development for leadership in student character development in both the civic education programs section for our social work department and for the first-year programs for our efforts in advising and retention. The guide contains profiles of 405 exemplary college programs that are committed to inspiring students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.
___"UMHB's strong commitment to character development and the strength of its program make it a model for colleges and universities nationwide," said Arthur J. Schwartz, director of character development programs at the John Templeton Foundation. "The Templeton Guide identifies colleges that encourage students to understand the importance of personal and civic responsibility, which will help them succeed in college and beyond. UMHB's work in this area is most impressive."
___We are equally proud to announce our progress in our $13.5 million capital and endowment campaign, Challenge Beyond 2000. We already have raised more than $7 million in cash and pledges toward goals of both $4.5 million for the endowment and $9 million for capital improvements.
___Diane Howard, associate professor of performance studies at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, recently published a book titled "Autobiographical Writing and Performing, An Introductory, Contemporary Guide to Process and Research in Speech Performance."
___We have two special opportunities in the near future for you to visit campus. Each year, the university proudly presents the Christmas Living Gallery in December. Six life-size Renaissance paintings depicting scenes around the nativity of Christ are displayed in the center of campus. The gallery will be open through Dec. 25 for free drive-by viewing each evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
___Also, our English department will host the annual Literary Festival Jan. 5-7. It is of particular interest to Texas authors, writers and editors. This year, the English department is announcing the publication of "New Texas '99," a collection of poetry and short fiction by Texas authors, edited by James Ward Lee and Donna Walker-Nixon, as well as, the publication of the third edition of "Windhover: A Journal of Christian Literature." For more information, contact the university.
___We have much to be grateful for at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, thanks to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Come see us and witness what he is doing on our campus.
