San Antonio facility mirrors expansion
___Wayland Baptist University's leadership as a pioneer in non-traditional adult education continues. On Nov. 15, the university broke ground on a new site for the Wayland San Antonio campus. Located on 12.7 acres at I-35 and O'Connor, the $5.3 million project includes the construction of a 33,000-square-foot facility that will double Wayland's current educational space.

___In 1984, Wayland San Antonio began classes with a dozen students. This fall, for the first time, San Antonio's enrollment exceeded Plainview's with more than 1,100 students. San Antonio graduates three times the number of Plainview graduates. The visibility afforded by the Interstate location, combined with the appeal of new, state-of-the-art facilities and expanded degree plans project Wayland San Antonio's growth to reach 3,000 by the year 2010.
___Wayland's strength is evident at its 10 other external campuses as well. Wichita Falls and Lubbock boast record 600 and 500-plus students respectively. Amarillo has 150 students; New Mexico centers in Clovis and Albuquerque have 150; and the Arizona locations in Phoenix and Sierra Vista have 250 students. With 650 enrolled in Alaska and 400 enrolled in Hawaii, the external campus enrollment totals a record 3,800 students; 400 are pursuing graduate degrees. Systemwide, Wayland's enrollment approaches 4,900 students.
___Wayland cares about the educational needs of the adult non-traditional student by offering classes on the evenings and weekends. Having a "user-friendly" flexible class schedule allows the adult student the opportunity to complete a degree within a busy family life and hectic work schedule.
___Also, Wayland's academic programs are widely used by our nation's military. Currently, 14 percent of Air Force personnel and 13 percent of all Army personnel receive Wayland baccalaureate degrees. Wayland's commitment to excellent values-based academic instruction is recognized as one of the nation's leading programs of adult non-traditional education.
___Jerry Dawson, consultant for the Christian Education Coordinating Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, said at the San Antonio ground-breaking: "Enrollment at state universities has remained flat over the past decade. The only significant increase in higher education enrollment has come from private universities. Of the private universities credited for this increase, 60 percent are Texas Baptist schools, and Wayland Baptist University is responsible for 40 percent of that growth!"
___God is blessing Wayland Baptist University! Blending Christian values with academic excellence to illuminate knowledge and transform lives is the essence of the Wayland experience on both the Plainview campus and all external campuses.
