AROUND THE STATE ___ Dan McAlexander became dean of graduate studies and special programs at Hardin-Simmons University Jan. 1. McAlexander, a tenured faculty member who was promoted to associate vice president for planning in June 1997, joined the school's faculty in 1978. He will continue as associate vice president for planning. ___ Dallas Baptist University is planning a time for high school juniors and seniors to learn more about choosing a college and the unique aspects of Christ-centered college life Jan. 29-30. Registration, which begins Friday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Mary C. Crowley Complex lobby, is $20 and covers dormitory lodging, meals and a T-shirt. ___RETIRING ___ Zack Pannell as minister of education at First Church in Denton. Pannell has been in his current position for 13 years and has 40 years of ministerial service. A reception is planned for Jan. 24. ___ James Barnes has retired after 11 years as pastor of Petty Church and 50 years in the ministry. ___ Henry Adrion will retire as pastor of First Church in Texas City effective Jan. 31. He retires after 43 years of ministry including 10 years as director of the church services division of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
___REVIVALS ___ Adamsville Church, Adamsville; Jan. 17-20; evangelist, Mark Kemp; music, Tracy Irvin; interim pastor, Jerry Stratton. ___Anniversaries ___ Hopewell Church in Winters honored Pastor Ferris Akins for his 50 years of ministry with a lunch and time of appreciation by friends and family. Gifts included a banner, plaque, stained glass windows and a video of his life. Akins has served eight churches and as director of missions for Brady-Coleman-Runnels Baptist Area from 1978-1995.

___EVENTS ___ Calvary Church in Stephenville will honor Venece Smith for 44 years as church pianist Jan. 17.
