___ Promise Keepers announces '99 conferences. Fifteen men's conferences are planned by Promise Keepers in 1999. The theme of the meetings will be "Choose You This Day," based on a passage from Joshua, with a focus on resisting temptations. For the second year, all Promise Keepers regional events will be free. The only Texas site announced for 1999 is San Antonio, Aug. 6-7.

___ Bauer throws hat in ring.

Conservative Christian activist Gary Bauer has formally announced his candidacy for president, saying he wants to ensure all participants in the campaign are forced to address issues like abortion. Bauer has taken a leave of absence from his duties as president of the Family Research Council in Washington.

___ "Prince of Egypt" makes money. It may not be the blockbuster its producers had hoped for, but the animated motion picture "Prince of Egypt" at least will make money. The film already has grossed more than $90 in North America, according to a report in USA Today. It cost an estimated $75 million to make, plus an undisclosed amount for advertising.

___ New school prayer amendment introduced. A Republican senator and representative have introduced a proposed constitutional amendment to allow voluntary prayer in public schools. The bill filed by Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S.C., and Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., would declare that nothing in the Constitution should prohibit "prayer in public schools or other public institutions." Opponents said such an action is unnessary because it creates no right that doesn't already exist.
