Around the State ___ Galveston Association will conduct its third annual Touch a Life Conference Feb. 27 at Calvary Church in Texas City. This year the conference focuses on ministering to people in recreational settings. The conference is open to the public. Registration is $10 per person or $100 per church. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH IN VERNON recently dedicated its E.S. James Building in memory of the church's longtime pastor who later became editor of the Baptist Standard. Pastor Robert Prince leads the congregation in dedication ceremonies and is joined by James' daughters, Ramona Daniel of Wichita Falls and Shirley Young of Dallas; his widow, Opal of Dallas; Presnall Wood, editor emeritus of the Standard; Bill Pinson, executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas; and Joyce Wood. The $1.3 million project includes 5,000 square feet of new building and 10,000 square feet of renovated space. It houses educational facilities, education offices, a music suite and fellowship hall.

___Events ___ First Church in Comanche will celebrate its 125th anniversary Feb. 21. The 11 a.m. service includes guest speaker Alan Lefever, director of the Texas Baptist Historical Collection. Van Christian is pastor. ___ Second Church in Andrews will celebrate its 50th anniversary Feb. 28. The morning service will begin at 9:30 a.m. and dinner will be held at noon. ___Deaths ___ Floyd Taylor, 83, Jan. 19. Taylor served Texas churches for 58 years as music director. He was a charter member of Robertson Avenue Church in Copperas Cove and Oak Hills Church in Kempner. His wife, Annie Mae; two sons; and a daughter survive him. ___ Jim Handorf, 47, Jan. 28. Handorf was minister of music at Greggton First Church in Longview for 16 years. His wife, Lorraine; one daughter; two sons; mother and stepfather; two brothers; and two sisters survive him. ___ C.W. Freeman, 68, Jan. 31. Freeman was a pastor for 51 years including churches in Clarksville and Mabank. He also served on the executive board of Southwestern Seminary in the 1970s and 1980s. His wife, Wanda; one daughter; and one son survive him. ___ C.A. Smith, 78, Jan. 31. Smith was a pastor for 50 years, and more than 39 years as pastor of Lakeside Church in Dallas. His wife, Juanita; one son; one daughter, and four grandchildren survive him.

Chaney, pastor of Inglewood Church in Grand Prairie, has announced his retirement effective March 7, his 14th anniversary as pastor of the church. He will continue his responsibilities as moderator of the Dallas Baptist Association and president of its executive board. ___ H.O. Bilderback will retire from First Church in Freeport April 4. He has 45 years in the ministry and 15 years at the Freeport church. He and his wife, Lila, reside at 706 Hollyhock in Richwood. SIDNEY YOUNG
| Paris, died Feb. 7 at St. Paul Hospital in Dallas. Young had entered the hospital for gall bladder surgery, but a post-surgical infection and complications from that infection led to his death. ___Young, a pastor for more than 25 years, served primarily in Louisiana before going to Paris in 1995. ___While in Louisiana Young served as first vice-president of the Louisiana Baptist Convention and also as president of the convention's executive board. ___He was recently elected to the executive board of the State Missions Commission of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. ___Young also was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved the outdoors. ___His wife, Debbie; sons, Andrew and Matthew; three brothers; and two sisters survive him. ___
