GRACE & PEACE:
Guidelines define
executive director-selection process

___"Let all things be done decently and in order" (1 Corinthians 14:40).
___Last week, I shared part of my letter to the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas concerning my retirement and indicated that this week I would outline the process of selecting a successor.
___This process is stated in Article VII. Officers,
WILLIAM M. PINSON JR.
Executive Director
BGCT Executive Board

Section 3 of the Organization and Policy Manual of the Baptist General Convention of Texas: "By convention action (convention-1969) the board is instructed to consider functioning through a nominating committee composed of five members of the Executive Board appointed by the chairperson and vice chairperson of the Executive Board, five members of the convention-at-large appointed by the president and vice presidents of the convention, and one member of each commission and coordinating board (who is not a member of the Executive Board) appointed by the respective chairpersons. The nomination of the nominating committee should be made to the Executive Board which would be free, after prayerful consideration, to nominate others."
___My letter stated: "In accordance with this official process, I am alerting the persons responsible for bringing nominations to the Executive Board for the search committee so that board members will be able to vote on these nominations and thus officially establish the search committee on Feb. 23rd.
___"I plan to serve as executive director until Jan. 31, 2000, believing that a year should be ample time for the search committee to be elected, to bond as a body brought together for a significant task, to consult with the numerous constituent groups ..., to receive recommendations and evaluate them, to prayerfully and carefully make a selection of a person to be nominated to the Executive Board, and to be able to provide a period of 'overlap' for the executive director-elect to consult with the numerous constituent groups, become familiar with the complex operation of the Executive Board and of the convention, and get acquainted with staff and various convention leaders before assuming the responsibilities of the office. ...
___"As to my ministry in Christ's cause beyond the date of my retirement, I will continue to follow the teachings of God's word in Proverbs 3:5-6. The Lord willing, I intend to remain in his service in whatever capacity he directs.
___"Bobbie and I thank you for all that you mean to the family of Baptists in Texas as well as to our own personal family. We love Texas Baptists and want the very best for all of our ministries in Christ's name. We pray for Texas Baptists in this transition time, a most significant one not only for the Baptist General Convention of Texas but for Baptists and others beyond Texas.
___"The future is bright for the Baptist General Convention of Texas in its prayerful efforts to fulfill the Great Commandment and the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ to the glory of God. I am confident that you will be praying for all those involved in this transition to a new executive director and a new era."
___Please join me in prayer for those nominating the search committee. Pray for the Executive Board as they vote on these persons. Pray for the search committee members as they begin their task.
