___Events ___ Harold Ivan Smith, nationally acclaimed author and speaker to adult singles, will lead a conference titled "Joy--First Person Singular" at First Church in Carrollton April 23-25. Topics will include "Destressing Your Single Season," "Being Distinctly Me," "Giving and Receiving" and "Surviving the Rugtugs." Smith combines humor with his leadership in the areas of divorce recovery, grief and single issues. FIRST CHURCH IN NEDERLAND celebrated the groundbreaking for a new educational building recently. Pastor Bobby Dagnel joined other staff and building committee members in breaking ground on the 31,000-square-foot, two-story structure which will facilitate both youth and adult education. The building is scheduled for completion in early 2000.

___Retiring ___ Richard Waters has retired as pastor of First Church in Palestine after six years as pastor there to begin Life Changing Ministries. He is available for supply and interims, and may be contacted at (903) 729-3065. ___ Berl Cavin will retire May 2 after eight years as pastor of New Hope Church in Big Sandy and 50 years in the ministry.
___Anniversaries ___ Charlie Dodd will celebrate 20 years as minister of youth at First Church in Midland April 22. ___ Highland Lakes Church in Kingsland will celebrate its 10th anniversary April 25. Former Pastor Mark Brumbaugh and his wife, Renae, will be preaching and providing music in both services. Gil Ash is pastor. ___ First Church in Tow will observe "Wesley Scott Day" April 25 in honor of his 20 years as music director.
___Deaths ___ Jimmie Littlefield, 65, March 14 in Harrisonville, Mo. Littlefield served 20 years in the Air Force before retiring in 1976. He then entered full-time ministry, serving as pastor to five Texas churches and one in Kansas before retiring in 1998 due to failing health. His wife, Etta; two daughters; and four grandchildren survive him.
