___ Suits against Collins dropped. Sexual misconduct lawsuits against Harvest Baptist Church of Watauga and the church's former pastor have been dropped by the five women who accused Ollin Collins of abusing his position as a pastor and counselor. In an April 21 story, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram cited court documents to report the suits were dropped after Collins admitted that he "engaged in an adulterous relationship" with three of the women. All five women retained the right to sue Collins again, said their attorney, John Holland. "We had asked him to apologize to the church and agree not to be in the pulpit until September of 2000, and he refuses to do that," Holland said. Collins, who was fired from the Watauga pastorate, also resigned as chairman of the trustee board at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary amid the scandal.
___ Prayer asked for hostage's family. Steven Gonzales, one of the American soldiers being held captive in Yugoslavia, has several family connections to Wayland Baptist University. Two uncles are Wayland graduates: Leonel Gonzales in 1971 and Arnulfo "Arnie" Gonzales in 1973. His aunt, Brenda Johnson Gonzales, is a 1973 graduate and administrative assistant at the university's Lubbock center. His cousin, Ephraim Gonzales, is a Wayland junior. The university asks Texas Baptists to pray for the family. Southwestern Bell has set up a free Internet account for the family to receive messages of support: tsoldier@swbell.net.
___ Logdson honors two. Logsdon School of Theology at Hardin-Simmons University honored two university graduates with its distinguished alumni award April 19. The awards, signifying effectiveness in vocational ministry since graduation, went to Susan Pigott and Stanley Blevins. Pigott currently is assistant professor of Old Testament at Logsdon. ___ Hispanic Seminary not in suit. Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary in San Antonio is not a party to a lawsuit recently filed against the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, announced the seminary's interim president, Charles Lee Williamson. Three Texas schools that contest the board's right to require Bible schools to receive state approval or accreditation before granting degrees have sued the coordinating board. Schools in the lawsuit are Tyndale Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Southern Bible Institute in Dallas and Hispanic Bible Institute in San Antonio. None of the schools is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
