GRACE & PEACE: Take some time to thank God for Christian mothers ___"Her children arise and call her blessed" (Proverbs 31:28) ___Mother's Day may be a painful time for many people because of the terrible relationship they have endured with a mother. The child who has suffered the abuse and neglect of an irresponsible mother, for example, may respond with cynicism to all the praise given to motherhood on this day. ___Mother's Day also may be a sorrowful time. A woman who desires deeply to be a mother but due to circumstances never has had this desire fulfilled may find this day heightens her disappointment and grief. | bitter disappointment in character and lifestyle may find this day opens painful wounds of memory and regret. ___On the other hand, many find this day an opportunity to celebrate motherhood and to hold high the biblical ideal for mothers and family. Such is the case with me. While I am sympathetic with those for whom Mother's Day is not a time of celebration, I am thankful for the three generations of mothers present in our family and for the lingering positive impact of generations past. ___The youngest mother in our family, our daughter Allison, provides joy in her care of Zachary, who is approaching his first birthday. A year of love marked by his dedication to the Lord in a special service in his church, attendance in Sunday school and nursery, and the celebration of each accomplishment indicate the importance of Christian parents such as Allison and Jerry. ___Meredith, our older daughter, the mother of Austin and Brooks, partners with husband David in providing a Christian home that helped Brooks make his profession of faith this year and experience believer's baptism. Active in Sunday school, involved with Royal Ambassadors and other church activities, she sets an example of Christian devotion while preparing for the adolescent years of Austin. ___Bobbie, mother and grandmother, is living proof that mothering is a blessing and responsibility that continues throughout life. Almost daily in contact with children and grandchildren, she provides encouragement, wisdom and prayer support to a growing family. ___MeeMaw Judd (mother, grandmother and great-grandmother) in her 80s sets an example for all in her positive attitude and Christian devotion. A widow who deals with chronic illnesses, she remains active in her church and in her care for others as well as involvement in every aspect of family life. ___Gone from this earth to heaven, other mothers in our family have left a continuing legacy for godly living and Christian service. In fact, each mother who has touched our family for generations has been a follower of Jesus, and several have been marvelously involved in the Lord's service. ___Therefore, while I recognize the pain that Mother's Day may bring to some, I celebrate the role of mothers in our family and pray that this positive experience could be true of all. ___Please pray for mothers that they may indeed be all that God desires them to be in relation to him and to children. Pray for those who suffer because of motherhood, that forgiveness may come. And pray that the generations to come will benefit from the ministry of the mothers of today.
