FERRIS AVENUE CHURCH in Waxahachie recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 550-seat sanctuary that will almost triple the church's current seating capacity. Taking part in the ceremony were Mayor Chuck Beatty, building team facilitator Greg Hall, Minister of Music Gary Chevalier, Pastor David Brown, chairman of deacons Jack Dineen, Minister of Youth Cory Hines and Mike Tompkins.

___Retiring
___ Allan Cox has retired after 41 years in the ministry. His last positions were music professor at East Texas Baptist University and minister of music at First Church in Marshall. ___ Raymond Dunkin has resigned as director of missions of Unity Association, effective June 30.
___ Charles Richardson has announced he will retire as pastor of First Church in Canton in December. He has been the church's pastor for 34 years.
___Deaths
___ Claud Slate, May 4 in Fort Worth. Slate was founding pastor of Rivercrest Church in Fort Worth and served as its pastor for 39 years. He also served Tarrant Association as moderator, vice moderator and secretary. Slate was instrumental in the founding of the Tarrant Baptist Bivocational Ministers' and Wives' Fellowship in 1982 and served as its president from its beginning until the time of his death. In 1984, he helped form the Texas Baptist bivocational association and served 10 years as president of that organization. He also served as president of the Southern Baptist Convention's bivocational pastor organization. His wife, Alline; one son; four daughters; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren survive him.
___ Gordon Graham, June 5 in San Antonio. Graham, former pastor of First Church in New Braunfels, was serving as associate minister to senior adults at Castle Hills Church in San Antonio at the time of his death. His wife, Sheryl, survives him.
___Events
___ First Church in Cisco honored Harry Grantz for his service to Baptist churches throughout Texas since his ordination at the church June 5, 1949. Grantz was pastor of churches for 44 years prior to retirement. Since retirement, he has continued to serve in interim and supply capacities in addition to being director of senior adult activities at First Church.
___ A.C. Green, National Basketball Association veteran, will speak to youth in Centerville area about abstinence June 21 at the Pierce Beard Fine Arts Center. The youth rally will begin at 5:30 p.m., and Green will begin to speak at 6:30 p.m. Call Richard Ray, pastor of North Creek Church in Centerville, at (903) 536-7051 for more information.
___ Cottonwood Church of Glen Rose is a testament to the cooperation of Texas Baptist churches. Brad Riza, director of missions for Paluxy Association, presented the church with a check for $5,000, a small- church matching grant from the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and a $5,000 gift from the association for its new facilities. Representatives of Acton Church in Granbury also presented a check for $10,000, and Lakeside Church of Granbury also contributed $1,500. Members of the Acton and Lakeside churches also will work to help construct the new building June 21-July 2. The rural Cottonwood Church gives nearly 20 percent of its offerings to missions through the Cooperative Program, associational missions and special offerings. John Allen, a Mission Service Corps volunteer and adjunct professor at Southwestern Seminary, is pastor.

___ Howard Chapman celebrates 30 years of senior adult ministry at First Church in Wichita Falls this month.
___ Rodney Watson will celebrate his 15th year as pastor of Lytle South Church in Abilene June 27. His father, Clinton Watson, will preach in the morning service. A lunch and time of fellowship will follow.
