Faith & Message
CONTINUING A PATTERN of lower attendance at Southern Baptist Convention annual meetings, this year's gathering June 15-16 in Atlanta's Georgia Dome drew about 11,400 messengers. Messengers approved a committee to review the entirety of the Baptist Faith & Message doctrinal statement and recommend revisions next June. They also re-elected Paige Patterson as president and passed resolutions targeting President Clinton, gays and ethnic cleansing. (BP photo by Bill Bangham)

___ATLANTA--As dusk began to fall over downtown Atlanta June 13, Southern Baptists paused from a day of revelry in Centennial Olympic Park to remember the 13 victims of the shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo.
___The tribute was part of a series of block parties, concerts and evangelistic encounters planned as a precursor to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting.

occasion as SBC preacher

___ATLANTA--Four years ago, Ralph Smith wondered if he ever would stand to preach again. On June 16, he walked to the podium in Atlanta's Georgia Dome and delivered the convention sermon for the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting.
___Smith, who for 36 years was pastor of Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin, has been suffering with Guillian-Barre syndrome, a debilitating muscular disease that forced him to take early retirement.
