EIGHT WOMEN FROM TEXAS were among the 32 individuals representing 12 states who participated in the Woman's Missionary Union Writers Conference in Birmingham, Ala. They will write for the 2000-2001 WMU curriculum materials. Retiring
___ Charles Myers has retired as pastor at Wingate Church in Wingate after more than 40 years. He previously served churches in Naples, Leonard, Garden Villas and Houston. He also had served as director of pastoral care and chaplain at Hendrick Medical Center.
___Anniversaries
___ Paul Appleby recently celebrated his fifth anniversary as minister to senior adults and administration at First Church in Paris.
___ Key Heights Church in Perryton will celebrate its 30th anniversary July 31-Aug. 1. Former pastors planning to attend include Marvin Knox, Jerry Ralston, Alan Tinsley and Don Ross. A brief memorial service will be held in honor of former pastor Joe Wortham. Jeff Staton is pastor.
___ Joy Church in Gladewater will celebrate its 95th anniversary with homecoming festivities Aug. 1. Lunch will be served at noon and singing by Vision 4 will begin at 1:30 p.m. For more information, call (903) 983-0270. Mark Towns is pastor.

Deaths
___ Coy Sims, 78, July 9 in Cleburne. Sims served in the Air Force during World War II, flying 35 missions over Europe. While serving as minister of music and education at First Church in Cleburne, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He elected to remain in the Air Force for 27 years, and upon his retirement in 1969 he returned to First Church in Cleburne as minister of music and religious education. He established the handbell choir, church library and Spanish mission during his tenure. He served the church a total of 16 years, retiring in 1983. His wife of 55 years, Jane; two daughters; two sons; one granddaughter; and a sister survive him.
___ Leota Walling, July 18 in San Antonio. She had been the church secretary for Highland Hills Church in San Antonio for more than 15 years.
