Wade nominated for BGCT executive director

___Charles Wade, pastor of First Baptist Church in Arlington and immediate past president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, has been nominated to be the next executive director of the state convention.
___Wade, 58, will be presented to the BGCT Executive Board at its regular fall meeting, Sept. 28 in Dallas. If elected, he will succeed Bill Pinson, who will retire Jan. 31, 2000. "I'm really humbled by the invitation to do this," said Wade, pastor of the Arlington church since 1976. Wade is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University and earned master's and doctor's degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He was president of the BGCT from 1995 to 1997. Full Story

Mark Coppenger fired as
president at Midwestern

___KANSAS CITY, Mo. (ABP) --Trustees of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary have fired President Mark Coppenger, saying misdirected anger diminished his ability to lead the Southern Baptist school in Kansas City, Mo.
___Michael Whitehead, the seminary's vice president for business affairs, has been named acting president.
___Trustees voted Sept. 14 by secret ballot to immediately dismiss Coppenger, who has led the seminary four years. The vote came in a brief open session after more than nine hours of executive sessions during a two-day trustee meeting called for the purpose of discussing leadership issues involving the 51-year-old president.
____Coppenger had confessed to "misappropriation of anger" before the board's executive committee in July and agreed to specific recommendations aimed at "repentance and restoration" toward individuals who have been stung by his temper.

Pena, Ballou to be nominated
as vice presidents in El Paso

___EL PASO--An associational director of missions and a veteran church staff member will be nominated for vice presidential positions when the Baptist General Convention of Texas holds its annual meeting in El Paso Nov. 8-9.
___Lorenzo Peña, director of missions for El Paso Baptist Association, will be nominated for first vice president by Levi Price, pastor of First Baptist Church in El Paso.
___Bill Ballou, minister with adults and senior adults at First Baptist Church in Abilene, will be nominated for second vice president by Winfred Moore, distinguished professor of religion at Baylor University.

CBF names a couple to lead
global missions program

___ATLANTA (ABP)--Veteran missionaries and Texas natives Gary and Barbara Baldridge will be nominated to lead the global missions program of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
___If elected, the couple will serve as co-coordinators of the Fellowship's 125-person missionary force and the Atlanta-based missions staff.
___Barbara Baldridge will be the first woman to fill a top administrative position in the Fellowship. The couple will share equally in the coordinator's duties, said Sanford Smith of Greensboro, N.C., chair of the search committee.
___"This is kind of coloring outside the lines as far as management is concerned," Smith said. "But we think they have the skills that will make it work. We feel comfortable with it."
