Gang member taught pastor about ministry

___HOUSTON--Eugene Rivers learned an unforgettable lesson about Christian ministry from a gang member in Boston. "I'm there and you're not," wherever kids go on the streets, the gang member said him. Rivers says that means churches have to stop "building malls" and go out among the poor, "where Jesus traveled."

Chapman and Wade differ over breakdown of last-minute talks

___DALLAS--A behind-the-scenes, last-minute effort at dialogue between Baptist General Convention of Texas leaders and Southern Baptist Convention leaders has failed to materialize.
___News of the plans for dialogue was reported Oct. 10 by Baptist Press, the public relations arm of the SBC Executive Committee. Release of that news story violated a key part of a gentlemen's agreement between BGCT Executive Director Charles Wade and Executive Committee President Morris Chapman, Wade asserted.

Porterfield tapped to lead Texas WMU

___Carolyn Porterfield, who has served eight years as associate executive director of Woman's Missionary Union of Texas, will be nominated by the Texas WMU personnel committee as the mission organization's next executive director-treasurer.
___The personnel committee will recommend Porterfield to the Texas WMU Executive Board at its Oct. 30 meeting. If elected by the board, she would become executive director-treasurer-elect Nov. 6 and then assume full responsibilities as executive director-treasurer March 1, when Joy Fenner retires from the post.

Golden Gate plans budget cut
___MILL VALLEY, Calif. (ABP)--Texas Baptists haven't yet voted on proposed reductions in funding to the six Southern Baptist Convention seminaries, but one of those seminaries already is planning budget cuts in anticipation of the Texas action.
