___ Nursing school dean dies. Nancy Schoenrock, dean of the Scott & White School of Nursing at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, died Oct. 3. "This is a devastating loss to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and to the School of Nursing," said President Jerry Bawcom. Schoenrock became dean of the nursing school in 1983. She had received numerous awards and honors, including being named Nurse of the Year by the Texas Nursing Association in 1997.
___ UMHB receives $500,000 grant. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has been awarded a $500,000 grant from Houston Endowment Inc., a philanthropy located in Houston and endowed by Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Jones. The grant has been designated for the Parker Academic Center, which will house the Schools of Business and Education, one of the university's capital objectives. This is one of the largest single gifts to date toward the estimated $4 million project.
___ SBTC increasing funds to SBC. The new Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, formed in opposition to the Baptist General Convention of Texas, is considering increasing the percentage of its undesignated receipts passed on to the Southern Baptist Convention. Messengers to the convention's annual meeting in November will be asked to approve increasing the SBC's percentage of Cooperative Program offerings from 50 percent to 51 percent. SBTC Executive Director Jim Richards reports the convention now has 405 affiliated churches, with fewer than 40 percent of those dually aligned with the BGCT.
___ Texan writes study. Mary Lou Serratt of Beeville wrote the adult study book for this year's Southern Baptist Convention international missions emphasis, to be observed in churches nationwide Dec. 3-10. The study, titled "Dispelling the Darkness in Turkey," is published by Woman's Missionary Union. Serratt is a member of First Baptist Church of Beeville and is married to Delbert Serratt, director of missions for Blanco Baptist Association.
___ Clarification: A previous report about the dedication of a new dormitory wing at Houston Baptist University said it was named in honor of Rich and Betty Mest. Actually, the couple attended the dedication representing the family of his father and stepmother, Henry and Catharine Mest, for whom the wing is named.
