Baylor regents applaud BGCT proposals ___WACO--Baylor University's board of regents last week adopted a resolution of support for the Baptist General Convention of Texas and urged Texas Baptists to support proposals to redirect funds away from Southern Baptist Convention seminaries and toward BGCT-related schools. ___The board expressed "its support, prayers and encouragement" to BGCT Executive Director Charles Wade "and to all fellow Texas Baptists who have resolved to resist the Fundamentalist faction in Baptist life identified with the leadership of the Southern Baptist Convention. ___"We further call upon fellow Texas Baptists to reject all human creeds and statements of faith that would deny us freedom of individual conscience, the right to interpret Scripture for ourselves, and would in any way diminish Jesus Christ as our guide and the Lord of Scripture," the statement said. Its reference was to the 2000 version of the Baptist Faith & Message adopted by the SBC in June. ___Baylor regents said they "support strongly" recommendations of the BGCT Administrative Committee to reallocate funds for theological education. They also used the resolution to "call upon all Texas Baptists to affirm these new opportunities to advance the kingdom of God through the ministries of the Baptist General Convention of Texas." ___Baylor's George W. Truett Theological Seminary would be a major recipient of the redirected funds. The committee recommending the additional funding for Texas schools said one of their goals is to provide tuition equalization assistance that will make BGCT-related schools more affordable than the six SBC seminaries. ___In other business, Baylor regents approved increases in tuition and fees for next year. Tuition will rise to $379 per semester hour, a 6.8 percent increase over the current rate of $355 per semester hour. Charges for residence halls will increase by 7.3 percent, with the exception of Penland Hall and Collins Hall, which will increase by 15 percent. Meal plans will increase by 3 percent. ___Taken together, that's an average increase of 6.5 percent--the smallest increase in four years, Baylor administrators explained.
