Sloan commends BGCT action ___WACO--Funding changes adopted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas this fall represent a "watershed event in Texas Baptist history," according to Baylor University President Robert Sloan. ___Writing in the November issue of Baylor News, Sloan commends the funding changes as "very positive recommendations ... that will have an impact on Baylor well into the 21st century." ___Among the changes is redirection of $4.3 million in funding away from Southern Baptist Convention seminaries and toward three BGCT-related seminaries. One of those beneficiaries is Baylor's Truett Seminary. ___"Texas Baptists acted boldly in Corpus Christi to stop funding the political machine of the Southern Baptist Convention leadership and to assume greater responsibility for how our state's Cooperative Program dollars are spent," Sloan wrote. "Now, as a result of the action taken at the convention, the BGCT can reinvest its money in Texas Baptist students and especially Texas Baptist seminary students--both men and women called of God--who choose to get a theological education at institutions like" Truett. ___Baylor will use the new funding to make its theological education more affordable to students, to attract new faculty and enhance educational programs, Sloan said. ___He predicted Truett Seminary's enrollment will double, from 250 students today to more than 500 in the next three to five years.
