Wayland trustees name Armes
president of Plainview campus
___PLAINVIEW--Paul Armes has been named president of Wayland Baptist University, succeeding Wallace Davis, who recently was named chancellor of the Wayland University system.
___In his new role, Armes will give specific oversight to the university's Plainview
campus. Davis is now giving direction to the larger system, which includes multiple campuses in Texas and beyond.
___Armes, who has been president of San Marcos Baptist Academy since 1996, was elected unanimously to the Wayland post during a specially called meeting of Wayland trustees Nov. 30.
___Armes and his wife, Duanea, met with the president's council and university faculty and staff before the board meeting.
___Reared in Fort Worth and El Paso, Armes holds a bachelor's degree in religion from Baylor University, and the master of divinity and doctor of philosophy degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also has done post-graduate study in education administration at Southwest Texas State University.
___At San Marcos Academy, Armes led the institution to its largest single-year enrollment growth in two decades and a fund-raising campaign with pledges and gifts of more than $4 million. The academy also added new academic programs and increased opportunities for Bible study and personal discipleship among students.
___Previously, Armes was pastor of First Baptist Church in Corpus Christi from 1987 to 1996, Oakwood Baptist Church in Lubbock from 1983 to 1987, Oakwood Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo., Big Springs Baptist Church in Garland and Agee Baptist Church in Hamilton.
___Armes is a member of the Prichard Family Foundation board of directors, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the Accreditation Commission of the Texas Association of Baptist Schools and the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce.
___The Armeses have two daughters, Sarah Emily, 22, and Ashley Rebecca, 18.
