Missionary family believes prayer saved them during home robbery

___LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic (BP)--Recently awakened early one Sunday morning, a Georgia man sensed an urgency to pray for missionary friends living in the Dominican Republic. Later that same day, a church member in Tennessee who had visited the Caribbean nation stood before his congregation and asked the church to pray for missionaries he felt were in great danger.
___The timing of these prayers may seem like coincidence to some, but Roger and Diana Gaunt are convinced these petitions to God were no fluke. The missionary couple has no doubt that these prayers were divine intervention that ultimately protected them during a recent home invasion.

Batson declines Truett Seminary deanship, search to continue

___WACO--The search for a dean at Baylor University's Truett Theological Seminary has not ended as anticipated but instead will resume from scratch.
___"We interviewed three candidates, the deanship was offered to Howard Batson (pastor of First Baptist Church in Amarillo), and after prayerful consideration he asked that his name be removed from consideration," explained Baylor spokesman Larry Brumley. "The seminary will continue to search for a dean for Truett, and we will be seeking the input of pastors and educators throughout Baptist life and from Texas in particular."

Court deals blow to vouchers

___CINCINNATI (ABP)--A federal court has struck down Cleveland's school-voucher program, saying it violates the constitutionally mandated separation of church and state.
___"This scheme involves the grant of state aid directly and predominantly to the coffers of the private, religious schools," Cincinnati's 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals said in a ruling Dec. 11. "And it is unquestioned that these institutions incorporate religious concepts, motives and themes into all facets of their educational planning."

BJC, others ask court to ensure access to schools

___WASHINGTON (ABP)--Nine religious organizations want the nation's highest court to send a clear signal that school districts may not bar religious groups from after-hours use of facilities that are otherwise open to community groups.
___In a friend-of-the-court brief, the Baptist Joint Committee and eight other groups argue that denying access only to religious groups violates the First Amendment.
