___MACON, Ga.--Smyth & Helwys Publishing has announced plans to open a Texas office within the next year.
___No definite location has been secured, nor have plans for staffing the office been finalized, said David Cassady, executive vice president of the moderate Baptist publishing house founded 10 years ago.
___"Our desire to have a presence in Texas is centered around our mission to serve churches," Cassady said. "With an office in Macon, Ga., we are already able to more easily support churches in the eastern United States. A Texas office will enable us to offer more significant support to churches west of the Mississippi.
___"We consider the opening of a Texas office as an expression of our ongoing involvement with many Texas churches and leaders," he added. "For example, in the past 10 years we have published books written by many Texas Baptist leaders, including David Currie, Paul Powell, Howard Batson, Jeanie Miley, Randall O'Brien, Brian Harbour, Bill Turner, Charles Talbert and others. Our adult Sunday School curriculum based on the Uniform Series includes Brian Harbour as the ongoing author of its commentary.
___"Thus, we see the opening of a Texas office as a natural next step in our ministry with Texas Baptists."
___With recent changes to the Baptist Faith & Message by the Southern Baptist Convention and changes to the curriculum lines of LifeWay Christian Resources, more churches are re-examining their literature options, Cassady said. "Our phones and mailboxes have not seen this much activity since the earliest days of Smyth & Helwys. Texas Baptists also have been dealing with these changes, and we have heard from them in unprecedented numbers."
___The Texas office likely will be located in Dallas, he said, and eventually will house both church resource support staff and some editorial staff.
