A Bible in the hand still may not be read
___WASHINGTON (RNS) --About 92 percent of Americans own at least one, and the average household has three. Two-thirds say it holds the answers to the basic questions of life, and the next president--whoever he is--will take a solemn oath on it, eventually. Yet one Gallup survey shows that fewer than half of Americans can name the first book of the Bible (Genesis), only one-third know who delivered the Sermon on the Mount (many named Billy Graham, not Jesus), and one-quarter do not know what is celebrated on Easter (the Resurrection, the foundational event of Christianity).

Texans in Zambia: Heavenly projections

___There was no room left in the one-room school, yet two more people squeezed in. Still more found rocks, stood on them outside the building and poked their heads through the open windows to watch the "Jesus" film. IMB Strategy Coordinators Mike and Lindy Howard and missionaries Jim and Sherry Payne cooperate in helping Zambian Baptists take the gospel to villages with these "heavenly projections."

CBF offering urges getting personal with missions
___ATLANTA--The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship is urging Baptists nationwide to "get personal" with missions this year.
___Promotion for the Fellowship's annual Global Missions Offering features the "get personal" theme as a way to illustrate the united focus CBF places on home and foreign missions.
___"Doing missions in my world doesn't have anything to do with geography. It has to do with whomever I come in contact," said Ann Tucker, a member of Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, who appears in a CBF video promoting the offering.

Texas camps report record year for professions of faith in Christ

___The 30 Texas Baptist encampments recorded record attendance and conversions during the year just ended, according to W.L. "Red" Colquitt, camp consultant for the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
___He noted the encampments saw a record number of first-time professions of faith this year, with 7,820 people reporting conversion experiences. This compares with 7,487 last year, 7,551 in 1997, 7,137 in 1997, 6,886 in 1996 and 6,597 in 1995.
