Baptist divorce rate higher
than American average

___"Born-again" Christians are more likely to go through a marital split than are non-Christians, according to a new study by the Barna Research Group.
___Using statistics drawn from a nationwide survey of nearly 4,000 adults, the Barna data show 11 percent of the adult population currently is divorced but that 25 percent of all adults have experienced at least one divorce.
___Among "born-again" Christians, 27 percent currently are divorced or previously have been divorced, compared with 24 percent among adults who are not "born again."
___Surprisingly, the Barna report said, the Christian group whose adherents have the highest likelihood of getting divorced are Baptists.

Evangelism Conference
will feature Jim Cymbala

___Jim Cymbala, pastor of the multi-racial Brooklyn Tabernacle and author of the best-selling "Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire," will be a keynote speaker for the opening session of the Texas Baptist Evangelism Conference Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
___Also speaking at the Monday evening session is Al Meredith, pastor of Wedgwood Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Wedgwood was the scene of random violence last September when a gunman burst into a prayer service and shot 14 young people--seven fatally--before turning his gun on himself.
___On Tuesday evening, conference-goers will hear from Bill Pinson, who retires Jan. 31 after more than 17 years as executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and from Charles Wade, who assumes the post as BGCT executive director Feb. 1.

stories of the decade

___JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (ABP) --The 1991 formation of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the first formal sign of organizational schism within the Southern Baptist Convention, was ranked the top Baptist news story of the 1990s by editors of Baptist state newspapers.
___Associated Baptist Press conducted an informal poll of Baptist editors nationwide to generate a list of the 10 most important news stories of the decade.
___Although the agencies, institutions and financial resources of the SBC still dwarf those of CBF, the new denomination-within-a-denomination draws financial support from about 1,500 churches and has an annual budget of $15.5 million. The Fellowship supports 126 career missionaries and enlists a yearly average of 3,600 volunteer missionaries in the United States and around the world. It also provides supplemental funding for a number of independent partner organizations that offer theological education, publishing and other church services.
