SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS CHURCH in Nocona recently broke ground on a 6,400-square-foot building. The building was financed with a $100,000 loan from the Baptist Church Loan Corporation, and the Texas Baptist Men will be the on hand in March to complete the inside of the building. The church, which was constituted last August, plans to meet in its new building by April. Pastor Walter Haynie and Building Committee Chairman Harold Oldaker are shown turning the first shovels of dirt.
Center of Evangelism and Encouragement will be the featured speakers. Other area preachers who also will participate in leading the study include Carlton Burris of Emmanuel Church in Marshall; David Dykes of Green Acres Church in Tyler; Wallace Edgar of Trinity Church in Texarkana; and Harry Lucenay of First Church in Longview. ___Anniversaries
___bluebull Cottonwood Church in Glen Rose celebrated Pastor John Allen's 50 years in the ministry Jan. 9. Charles Chaney, professor of missions at Southwestern Seminary, was the guest speaker. During his ministry, Allen has served as area missionary for South Dakota, at the Home Mission Board in Atlanta as associate director of church extension, as state director of missions and executive director of the Alaska Convention, and as pastor of churches in Texas, California and Virginia.
___bluebull Gary Hearon will celebrate his 15th anniversary as executive director of Dallas Association Jan. 21.
___bluebull Carrol Williams will celebrate 15 years as minister of education of First Church in Huntsville Jan. 27.

___Retiring
___bluebull Jim Hancock retired as director of missions of Lubbock Association Jan. 1. He will continue to live in Lubbock and can be reached at (806) 798-7408.
___bluebull Elvin Gibson, pastor of Hillcrest Church in Nederland for 25 years, retired Jan. 16. The church honored him with a retirement dinner in honor of more than 42 years in pastoral ministry. Webb previously served Texas churches in Broaddus, Jasper, China and League City. Gibson also served for 19 years as a trustee of Baptist Hospital of Southeast Texas; four years as a member of the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas; and in numerous posts in Golden Triangle Association, including serving two years as moderator of the Executive Board. ___bluebull Harold Norris will retire from Dallas Baptist University Jan. 31. Norris has been senior vice president for financial affairs for more than 11 years. He will continue to provide financial consultation on a part-time basis as a senior adviser to the president, Gary Cook. A retirement reception is set for Jan. 28 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Hillcrest Great Hall of the John G. Mahler Student Center. Norris and his wife, Mary Kathryn, are members of First Church in Frisco.

___bluebull First Church in Moody will commemorate 148 years of service to the community with special services March 12. The 10:45 a.m. service will feature Steve Hardcastle and Mike Brittain. The 2 p.m. service will be led by Jim Kerby and Marion Ford. A lunch will follow the morning service. Make reservations for the meal by calling (254) 853-2166 between 9 a.m. and noon any weekday. ___Deaths
___bluebull W.W. Rose, 96, Dec. 25 in Carthage. Rose, a charter member and deacon of Southside Church in Carthage, was the father of two long-time deacon sons and two preacher sons, including Larry Rose, who served as director of missions for Tarrant Association until his death in 1998. His wife, Aldine, preceded him in death in 1980. He is survived by sons, Wylie, Jackie and Walter.
