Academy seeks to help students
after dorm director accused

___SAN MARCOS--Brad Bartlett-Dixon, a dormitory director at San Marcos Baptist Academy, has been charged with sexual crimes against minors. Authorities believe he may have victimized six boys who attend the academy's middle school.
___Students reported the alleged sexual misconduct to academy administrators Saturday, Jan. 15.
___The administrators immediately contacted the Hays County Sheriff's Department and notified parents of the students who made the report, academy President Paul Armes said. The school also has written to parents of all current students, as well as parents of former students who have attended the academy since Bartlett-Dixon was employed.
___Bartlett-Dixon immediately was removed from the campus, Armes said. He has been suspended with pay pending investigation of the alleged incidents.

Ministry needs along
border growing rapidly

___Evangelism and church planting are not keeping pace with the explosive population growth along the Texas/Mexico border, according to Dexton Shores, director of River Ministry with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
___Seventy-two percent of the 14 million people living along the Rio Grande do not practice any religion, Shores noted. And on the Mexico side of the border alone, the population is expected to triple in the next 20 years.
___"In spite of all that Texas Baptists have done along the border, with the growing population, we only have one Baptist church for every 67,000 people on the Mexico side of the border," he said.

State Missions Commission hires first
African-American evangelism staffer

___The Baptist General Convention of Texas' State Missions Commission hired its first African-American evangelism staff member and voted to change the name of the Sunday School/discipleship division at its winter meeting, Jan. 20 in Dallas.
___Kenneth Blake, senior pastor of Westside Baptist Church in Lewisville, was elected as the African-American church strategy consultant in the evangelism division. It is a part-time position; he will remain as pastor of the church.
___The new position is intended to expand the effectiveness of sharing the Christian gospel with about 2.5 million African-American Texans and to assist the growing number of African-American Texas Baptist churches with evangelism strategy.
