___bluebull Historical Society to meet. The spring meeting of the Texas Baptist Historical Society will be held in conjunction with the Texas State Historical Association. A joint session will be held March 3, at 10:30 a.m. at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin. Theme for the session is "It was a Black and White Issue: Texas Baptists and Civil Rights." Bill Tillman of Hardin-Simmons University will present a paper titled "T.B. Maston: The Conscience of Texas Baptists." Vincent Clark of McLennan County Community College will examine civil rights. Responses will be given by Abner McCall, former president of Baylor University, and James Dunn, president of the Baptist Joint Committee Endowment Fund. Contact Alan Lefever at (214) 887-5422.
___bluebull UMHB trustees meet. Trustees of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, meeting in Belton Feb. 4, approved a 2000-2001 budget of $27.15 million. The budget increases tuition from $265 to $290 per hour for undergraduates and from $290 to $320 per hour for graduate students. Tuition is offset for more than 80 percent of students through financial aid.
___bluebull Panhandle conference planned. "Jesus Christ: The Same Yesterday, Today and Forever" will be the theme for the Panhandle Pastors' and Laymen's Conference, Feb. 28-29 at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview. Michael Dean, pastor of Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth, will be the featured preacher. Other sermons will be delivered by Robert Hensley, a retired missionary to Brazil; Steve Vernon, pastor of First Baptist Church in Levelland; and Scott Willingham, pastor of First Baptist Church in Dumas. Bible studies will be presented by members of the Wayland religion faculty. A session in Spanish will feature sermons by Michael Gonzales, former ethnic evangelism director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, now with the Southern Baptist Annuity Board, and Rafael Marin, pastor of Templo Bautista in Friona.
___bluebull Enrollment up at UMHB. Spring enrollment of 2,365 students at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is a record, up from 2,312 students last spring.
___bluebull Secretaries to meet. Secretaries from churches across Texas will gather to sharpen their skills and deepen their faith at the 2000 Texas Association of Southern Baptist Secretaries conference April 6-8 in Houston. The conference will include a banquet featuring Hilda Moffett, associate director of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's campus at Houston Baptist University. Charles Wade, new executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, will be the keynote speaker for a luncheon. Bob Campbell, pastor of Westbury Baptist Church in Houston, will be the featured speaker at a general session. Registration, which covers all meals, is $115 for members before March 1, $135 for members after March 1 and $140 for non-members.
