FCC reverses guideline
on religious broadcasting

___WASHINGTON (ABP)--Pressured by religious broadcasters and members of Congress, the Federal Communications Commission voted 4-1 Jan. 28 to vacate guidelines that critics say discriminated against religious broadcasters.
___In December, the FCC specified that more than half the programming on educational channels must "primarily serve an educational, instructional or cultural purpose in the station's community."

Truett Seminary prepares to build

___WACO--Meeting under a huge white tent he compared to the Israelites' tabernacle in the wilderness, Truett Theological Seminary Dean Brad Creed led 350 people in groundbreaking ceremonies for a permanent "temple" for the young seminary Feb. 2.
___The $17 million structure will be built on the northwest corner of the Baylor campus, within view of passing cars on I-35. Creed made note of this fact, explaining that the 100-foot chapel spire on the building will become a visible reminder of the mission of the seminary and the university.

Padre Island's Beach Reach expands
ministry with new Internet services

___Beach Reach at South Padre Island will go high-tech this year.
___The annual ministry and evangelism project by hundreds of college students from Texas and beyond will add several new Internet-related components this year, according to Buddy Young, Baptist Student Ministries director at West Texas A&M in Canyon. Young is coordinator of Beach Reach.
___The effort now has its own website: www.beachreach.org, which serves several purposes. The site includes extensive training materials that Beach Reach volunteers must complete before arriving on the Texas Gulf coast March 11. It also includes a daily prayer guide, supporting a "40 days of prayer" emphasis which began Feb. 1.

Jack Graham to nominate Merritt

___JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (ABP)--Suburban Atlanta pastor James Merritt likely will be nominated as president of the Southern Baptist Convention when it meets June 13-14 in Orlando, Fla.
___Merritt's nomination was mentioned Jan. 31 at a Florida conference that has in the past served as a launching pad for successful presidential campaigns.
___Merritt said he "hasn't spoken directly" with anyone, but he "would be honored" if he were nominated. Graham could not be reached for comment.
