Offering goal set at $5.6 million

___CEDAR HILL--A $5.6 million goal has been set for this year's Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions.

allocations during its March 21-23 meeting at Mount Lebanon Baptist Encampment.
___To help churches and associations advance the priorities of the Texas 2000 emphasis, the offering will provide $279,000 for sharing the gospel of Jesus; $582,000 for ministry to human needs; $283,000 for developing Christian families; $1.44 million to equip God's people for ministry; and $3 million to strengthen and start churches.
___New allocations include:

$100,000 to implement a comprehensive strategy for helping churches achieve and maintain congregational health with a view to missions development.

$45,000 for disaster relief ministry provisions, including a mobile disaster relief communications and coordination center, two disaster relief fly-in kitchens and a disaster relief child-care trailer.

$30,000 for strategic association transitions, helping associations develop ministry responses and strategies to remain relevant and supportive of their churches.

$23,000 to develop English and Spanish "Hands On Ministry" training materials for youth and adults.

$20,000 to provide student interns from a Texas Baptist university to serve resource-challenged churches committed to local missions and ministries.

$20,000 to provide training materials for Bible study and outreach in ethnic new churches.

$15,000 to write, develop and distribute an eight-week individual study for Spanish-speaking women who want to learn how to share their faith.

$15,000 to provide resources to begin or expand missions education and participation among focused groups such as smaller membership churches, new churches and "key" churches.
___Other new allocations include evangelism training for Korean and Chinese women, a university campus-based "Jesus" video distribution and personal evangelism project, church-based ministries focusing on at-risk children and youth, and Women Reaching Texas pilot evangelism projects in six associations.
___The largest single line item is $1.5 million to help churches start new churches. Any offerings received over the basic goal will be allocated to new church starts and to the Baptist General Convention of Texas "Putting God's Word to Work" media campaign that is being piloted in selected Texas regions.
___"In Joy ... Share the Light" is the theme of the 2000 Week of Prayer for Texas Missions, Sept. 10-17.
___Last year, Texas Baptists surpassed the statewide goal for the Mary Hill Davis Offering, giving $5.5 million.
