Family ministry book honored. "Family Ministry: A Comprehensive Guide," written by Diana Garland, director of graduate social work education at Baylor University, was named Book of the Year by the Academy of Parish Clergy, based at Princeton Theological Seminary.

Sorrels to ETBU. Paul Sorrels has been named vice president of academic affairs at East Texas Baptist University. A graduate of Howard Payne University and Texas Women's University, he moves from Bluefield College in Virginia, where he was vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty. He previously was dean of graduate studies and special programs at Hardin-Simmons University.

Gilman Education Lab dedicated. The Gilman Center for Education Technology at Hardin-Simmons University was dedicated April 7. It is named in honor of Peter Gilman, retired dean of the Irvin School of Education.

Wayland students go West. Over spring break, 25 Wayland Baptist University students went on a mission trip to Las Vegas, Nev., sponsored by First Baptist Church of Plainview. The students' main project was a sports clinic, where soccer was used to reach out to a group of kids. Students also did door-to-door surveys asking questions about music and churches.

Rivera takes new role. Daniel Rivera has been elected vice president for institutional advancement at Hispanic Baptist Theological School in San Antonio. For the past two years, Rivera has been dean of academic affairs at the school, which is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. From 1976-1988, Rivera was president of the school, which was then known as the Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary. He also was president of Valley Baptist Academy in Harlingen from 1993-1997.
