3,400 attend Congreso. About 3,400 Texas Baptist Hispanic youth and singles attended the annual Congreso April 20-22 in San Antonio, the largest attendance in the event's 38-year history. The church with the largest group attending was Primera Iglesia Bautista of Fort Worth, with 103. During the event's worship service, 283 professions of faith in Christ were recorded. Officers re-elected are President Mark Rangel of Garland, Vice President Clarissa Barrera of San Antonio and Secretary Magaly Acosta of Fort Worth.
___ Wilkinses and Presley honored. Howard and Hope Wilkins of Abilene and Dewey Presley of Dallas are recipients of Outstanding Philanthropist Awards from the Texas Baptist Development Officers Association. The Wilkinses both have served as trustees of Hardin-Simmons University and both serve currently on the school's development board. He also has served on the board of Hendrick Medical Center Foundation. Presley was chairman of Baylor University's board from 1971 to 1982 and has served in a variety of other roles, including terms on the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee, Baylor University Medical Center board, Baptist Foundation of Texas board and SBC Annuity Board.
___ HSU cheerleaders named best. The Hardin-Simmons University cheerleaders placed higher than any other Christian university in the nation during the National Cheerleading Association competition in Daytona Beach, Fla. Among all schools in the Division II/Division III bracket, the Hardin-Simmons cheerleaders placed seventh overall. The Texans generated quite a lot of publicity in Florida, appearing in the Orlando Sentinel and on a regional Fox News station. Highlights of the squad's competition will be shown on the USA cable network May 21 at 8 a.m.
___ Correction: The Baptist Standard last week incorrectly identified Maud as a town in the Pandhandle. Actually, Maud lies in East Texas, near Texarkana, and should not be confused with Claude, a town of about the same size which does belong in the Panhandle.
