Help needed in Galveston. World Changers, a national missions education program for youth, will bring 400 middle school and high school students to Galveston June 10-17 for a variety of ministry projects, including some repairs to homes of the economically disadvantaged. Due to an unexpected shortage of government funding for these repairs, Baptists across Texas are asked to partner with Galveston Baptist Association

HBU presents "Bonhoeffer." Houston Baptist University's School of Music will present the world premiere of "Bonhoeffer," an opera in two acts based on the life story of Lutheran martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The opera, written by HBU professor Ann Gebuhr and Robert Hatten of Indiana University, will be presented at 8 p.m. May 19, 20 and 22 at Moores Opera House. Shoe drive organizers to meet. Texas Baptists interested in assisting with Buckner Orphan Care International's Shoes for Orphan Souls mission project are invited to attend an informational meeting Friday, May 19. The meeting will be held at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas from noon to 1:30 p.m. and will include lunch. Anyone interested in attending may call Tiffany Taylor at (214) 758-8055, or e-mail her at ttaylor@buckner.org. Volunteers attending the meeting will receive an overview about the shoe drive and materials designed to support shoe collection drives in local churches.

UMHB halfway to $13.5 million goal. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has surpassed the halfway mark in its $13.5 million capital and endowment campaign, Challenge Beyond 2000. As of April 30, the university has received more than $8.6 million in cash, pledges and deferred gifts.

University musicians headed to Germany. Two University of Mary Hardin-Baylor choral ensembles, One Voice and the Chamber Singers, will travel to Hannover, Germany, May 30 to June 10 in cooperation with Texas Partnerships. Part of the tour will include singing at the 2000 World's Fair. Under the direction of David Guess, director of choral activities, the 35 students will perform concerts at local churches and schools and spend afternoons with the youth of the area.

Baylor names music dean. William May Jr., a 1969 graduate of Baylor University, has been named dean of Baylor's School of Music. May moves from the University of North Texas, where he has been interim dean of the College of Music. In addition to his undergraduate degree from Baylor, May holds the master of music education degree from the University of North Texas and a doctorate in music education from the University of Kansas. May is a past president of the Texas Music Educators Association, the first person in a college or university position ever elected to that post.

TBM to Los Alamos. Two feeding units of Texas Baptist Men were requested to help with relief in the Los Alamos, N.M., forest fire disaster May 11 and a third unit was on standby. The Top of Texas Unit, led by Jered Sellers of Plains, and the Permian Basin Unit, led by Theron Scott of Odessa, were to rendezvous at Glorieta, N.M. The El Paso Unit, led by Bob Jones of El Paso, was on standby.

Fanning and Barrow to be honored. Baylor University will bestow its George W. Truett Distinguished Church Service Award on San Antonio pastor Buckner Fanning during commencement ceremonies May 13. Fanning is longtime pastor of Trinity Baptist Church. Baylor's Price Daniel Public Service Award will be given to Charles Barrow, former dean of the Baylor Law School and former justice on the Texas Supreme Court.

LifeWay acquires Longview store. LifeWay Christian Stores has reached a tentative agreement to acquire New Life Bible Bookstore in Longview from the Bob Coleman family, founders of the store. The store is tentatively set to open as LifeWay Christian Store around the first of June.
