Ask God to bless the work of six study committees

studying key issues:
___
Committee to study the basis of association formation--Darold Morgan, chairman. The committee is examining how the Baptist General Convention of Texas should relate to ethnic and affinity associations that may draw member churches from established associations, while respecting the right of churches to form associations to further the work of the gospel. This group plans to complete its assignment in time to report to the convention this November in Corpus Christi.
___
Committee to study how our convention should relate to churches dually aligned with another state convention--Mark Newton, chairman. This is a complex issue that could affect the wide-ranging services the BGCT provides to cooperating churches, as well as representation on the convention's institutional boards, coordinating boards, commissions and committees. The committee is seeking a fair and equitable answer and plans to report to the convention this fall.
___
Committee to study the mission-sending agencies of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship--Jim Denison, chairman. This group probably will not be prepared to bring a full report until 2001, since the task is large and crucial. This is a large committee, with capable, mission-hearted leaders who will work prayerfully and diligently to bring workable recommendations to us.
___
Committee to study the work of the six SBC seminaries and the two Texas seminaries related to the BGCT--Robert Campbell, chairman. This group has been asked to look into issues of theology, philosophy and resources related to the seminaries' preparation of ministers for Texas churches. The committee has indicated it will need extended time to carefully and thoroughly respond to the assignment and probably will bring findings to the convention in 2001.
___
Committee to study restructuring the Baptist Building staff--Louis Cobbs, chairman. The committee is exploring ways to restructure the Baptist Building staff so we can be more responsive to the needs of local churches, associations and institutions. This committee will help me bring a recommendation to the Executive Board in September.
___
Committee for strategic planning--chairman to be announced. As we near the conclusion of the Texas 2000 emphasis, we face the challenge of clarifying our vision and developing action plans for the next three to five years. I have asked the officers of the convention to appoint a large, representative committee of 58 laypeople and ministers to develop a strategy to reach our state for Christ. While the full report will not be ready until 2001, I pray the committee will be able to share with the convention in Corpus Christi a glimpse of the new vision God has for Texas Baptists.
___The assignment is challenging, but I hope you sense I am having a good time serving you in this place.
___Even when the issues are difficult and complex, I am at peace because I really do believe God has called me to this task and he will make a way forward for us together.
___We are loved ...
