Davis to chair UMHB trustees
___BELTON--Andy Davis, pastor of First Baptist Church of Belton, has been elected chairman of the board of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

___Other officers elected during a May 5 meeting are Carl Hudson, personnel manager for ALCOA in Rockdale, vice-chairman; and Halley Tolbert Jr, pastor of Westside Baptist Church in Killeen, secretary/treasurer.
___New officers for the acting committees are Henry Adrion III of Hilltop Lakes (Texas City), Jim Haskell of Georgetown, Clark Potter of Belton and Marion Barren of Huntsville.
___Members of the executive committee of the board serving at large are Martha Cooper of Dallas, Camille Dillard of Dallas, Charley Powell of Belton and JoAn Musick-Flowers of Belton.
___University President Jerry Bawcom reported that student prospects for fall 2000 are running well ahead of the same time last year.
___"We are pleased to report a continued growth at UMHB and feel very strongly that this trend will continue into the future," he said.
___Trustees heard from the academic committee that the university's chemistry club received the outstanding chapter award for the third year in a row. Also, the nursing students have a 100 percent pass rate on the license exam for fall grads. In education, with a 97 percent pass rate on certification, the university tied for 13th among 86 schools.
___Trustees also were told the retention rate for students from fall to spring is 10 percent higher than last year.
___The number of UMHB students attending the Christian leadership conference doubled this year, and a new Baptist Student Ministry director, Shawn Shannon from Houston Baptist University, has been hired to begin in June, trustees were told.
___The finance committee reported the university's best year in history financially. Also, the university had a record year in gifts and grants, with the endowment fund growing from $45 million to $51.9 million.
___Physical plant projects under way at UMHB include a new apartment-style dorm to be completed in the fall for $1 million and computer upgrades.
