John Wilkerson elected
chairman of Baylor's board of regents

___WACO--Baylor University regents meeting May 5 adopted a $237 million operating budget for 2000-2001, elected officers, named six new regents to the board and approved a resolution naming retiring Chancellor Herbert Reynolds president emeritus.

___Next year's budget, which takes effect June 1, is a $17 million, or 7.7 percent, increase over the current budget of $220 million.
___John Wilkerson Jr., chairman of the board of Wilkerson Storage Co. in Lubbock, was elected chairman of the board of regents. Wilkerson also has been active in the Baptist General Convention of Texas, currently serving as chairman of the BGCT's Committee on Baptist Integrity.
___Elected as vice chairs were Bill Brian, an attorney from Amarillo who recently served as chairman of the BGCT's executive director search committee; Mary Chavanne-Martin, an investor from Houston; and Drayton McLane Jr., chairman of the Houston Astros, Astrodome USA and McLane Group L.P. in Temple.
___Elected to three-year terms on the board of regents were Carl Bell, president and CEO of Bell Insurance Group Inc. of Dallas; Toby Druin of Duncanville, editor emeritus of the Baptist Standard; Phil Lineberger, pastor of Williams Trace Baptist Church in Sugar Land; Belinda Reyes, speech pathologist from San Antonio; Donell Teaff, author and speaker from Waco; and Jim Turner, president and CEO of Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group Inc. of Dallas.
___Three current regents were re-elected to additional three-year terms: Chavanne-Martin; State Sen. David M. Sibley of Waco; and McLane.
___Rotating off the board after nine years of service are John Boyd, chief justice of the Seventh Court of Appeals in Amarillo; Fred Cameron, a Houston attorney and past chairman of the board of regents; Will Long, a Belton physician; Jaclanel McFarland, Houston attorney; Ramiro Pena, Temple physician; Daniel Roper Jr., Sulphur Springs dentist; Ralph Storm, Corpus Christi businessman; and Nancy Thurmond, Fort Worth Realtor.
