Around the state
___bluebull Don Williford, associate professor of theology for Logsdon School of Theology, will head the Hardin-Simmons University faculty for the coming year after his election at a recent faculty meeting. Williford joined the faculty in 1992, coming from First Baptist Church in Brownwood, where he was pastor.
___bluebull Don Smith, professor of political science, was named Howard Payne University's outstanding faculty member for 1999-2000. Cheryl Mangrum, director of admissions, was named the outstanding staff member. Faculty members receiving certificates for excellence in teaching were Gary Gramling, associate professor of Christian studies; John Nickols, assistant professor of history and political science; Robert Smith, distinguished professor of Christian studies; and Robert Tucker, assistant professor of music. Staff receiving service awards were Randy Weehunt, director of administrative computing; Penni Morrison, secretary; and LaVon Snider, technical services assistant. Faculty and staff recognized upon their retirement were Grace Gray, assistant director of financial aid; Marilynn Jackson, associate professor of psychology; Robert Smith; and LaVon Snider.

___Retiring
___bluebull Ken Flowers, pastor of First Church in Brownfield for more than 21 years, will retire June 4. The church will hold a reception for him and his wife, Marge, from 2-4 p.m. that day to honor his 38 years of ministry. He previously was pastor of First Church in Iowa Park. Flowers was instrumental in the founding of Terry County's Ardeth Swain Food Box in Brownfield and has served as president and secretary/treasurer several times since its inception. He also has held positions in both the county ministerial alliance and South Plains Association. He twice served as president of the Panhandle Pastors' and Laymen's Conference, has served on numerous committees at Wayland Baptist University and is presently chairman of the board of the directors of the Baptist Standard. The Flowerses will move to Kingsland.

___Anniversaries
___bluebull Shenandoah Church in Cedar Park celebrated its 25th anniversary May 7. Larry Dale Sullivan is pastor.
___bluebull Greg Smith will celebrate his fifth anniversary as pastor of Calvary Church in Denison May 28.
___bluebull Union Church in Sulphur Springs will celebrate its 150th anniversary June 3-4. Services will start at 10:45 a.m. Saturday with the annual Cemetery Homecoming and Memorial Day. A lunch will follow, and then a gospel sing and ice cream social will be held. Sunday's service will include former pastors Raymond Diggs, Lee Emerson, Larry Baxley and George McCain. A catered lunch will follow the service. Delmar McCracken is pastor.

___bluebull Groups going to Russia and a Navajo mission and the Chapel Choir going to Montana will be commissioned at a special service at Broadway Church in Fort Worth May 28.
