Baptist Faith & Message changes touch on Bible, gender, sexuality

___If the Baptist Faith & Message is amended according to suggestions released May 18 by a Southern Baptist Convention study committee, Southern Baptists will go on record
declaring women ineligible to be pastors, condemning abortion and homosexuality but softening their stance on observance of the Lord's Day.
___The proposed changes also would drop explicit references to the doctrines of soul competency and the priesthood of the believer, hailed as undergirding hallmarks of the 1963 Baptist Faith & Message. The proposal does not insert the word "inerrant" in its description of Scripture, but it does remove a previous statement that "the criterion by which the Bible is to be interpreted is Jesus Christ."

Houston Baptist University trustees circumvent BGCT control of board

___HOUSTON--Trustees of Houston Baptist University voted without opposition May 16 to end the Baptist General Convention of Texas' role in appointing the university's entire trustee board, offering instead for the state convention to name one-fourth of the board.
___The trustees themselves would name the remaining three-fourths of the board.
___BGCT officials received no advance notice of the proposal, were not present at the meeting and were taken by surprise when notified late that day.

North Dallas church has new role in changing community

___DALLAS--North Dallas Baptist Church and its surrounding neighborhood have been through plenty of changes, and Ellis Watkins has seen them all in his 70 years at the church.
___The 80-year-old chairman of deacons remembers when the area north of downtown Dallas and southeast of Love Field was predominantly Anglo. In recent years, large numbers of Hispanic, African-American and Asian residents have been added to the multi-cultural mix.
___As the neighborhood changed, many longtime members of North Dallas Baptist Church moved away. Attendance plummeted from 580 in the 1950s to 30 in the 1990s. He elected to stay

'20/20' program focuses on Texas church and SBC evangelism
___DALLAS--A Texas church became the focus of a national television news program about Southern Baptists and Jewish evangelism May 12.
___A segment of the ABC news program "20/20" highlighted the case of a 12-year-old Jewish boy who attended a youth event at First Baptist Church of Sunnyvale and made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ.
___The boy's parents later claimed he was coerced into a decision he shouldn't have made, noting he was only three months away from his bar mitzvah, a major rite of passage in the Jewish faith.
