Texas Baptists gather around Wade for time of blessing

___DALLAS—About 400 Baptists from across the state gathered for the ceremony to pronounce a blessing upon Wade and his wife, Rosemary, for the task before them. Like a worship service, hymns, prayers and Scripture spiced the occasion.
___"It says something about Baptists that we can do such a solemn thing as this in the public square," Wade said, standing in the Grand Hall of Union Station in downtown Dallas.

BGCT will escrow funds for HBU while trustees' action reviewed

___The Baptist General Convention of Texas will withhold further funding of Houston Baptist University until a dispute between the state convention and university is resolved.
___Members of the BGCT Executive Board affirmed escrowing Cooperative Program gifts to HBU during a May 23 meeting in Dallas. The Executive Board also approved creation of a special committee to "carefully study the unilateral action taken by the trustees of Houston Baptist University" to create a self-perpetuating board of trustees.

Southwestern Seminary opens Ralph Smith Leadership Center
___FORT WORTH--The first phase of the Ralph Smith Leadership Development Center was dedicated May 12 at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
___Located at the southeast corner of the seminary's Fort Worth campus, the facility currently includes 32 guest rooms and a business center, the Ray Riley Alumni Center and the Lucille Loyd Meadows Visitors Center.
___When completed, the 130,000-square-foot complex will have 96 guest rooms and conference facilities for 1,200 people. Phase two, with 25 guest rooms, meeting rooms of various sizes, an English garden, dining area and banquet facilities, is scheduled to open in spring 2001.

Parks claims SBC changed by deception

___COLUMBIA, Mo. (ABP)--In his strongest remarks on record to date, a longtime missions leader claimed conservatives gained control of the Southern Baptist Convention through deception.
___"This whole takeover was based on deceit, on lying, on cheating," said Keith Parks, former president of the SBC agency now known as the International Mission Board.
