Allison follows Powell at Baylor
___ DALLAS--Baylor Health Care System leader Boone Powell Jr. is turning over the reigns of the Baptist institution to his longtime colleague, Joel Allison.
___Allison has been elected president and chief executive officer of the system.

___The Powell name has been synonymous with the Baylor system for a half-century. Boone Powell Sr., Powell's father, headed the medical facility for 30 years.
___Allison has been president and chief operating officer, the No. 2 position in the system, for about seven years.
___Powell, who has headed up the Baylor system for 20 years, will focus his efforts on health care issues affecting the enterprise, a system spokesperson said. He also will devote more time to national health care policy debate, the Baylor Health Care System Foundation and the research efforts of the Baylor Research Institute.
___"After long consideration, I feel the time is right to turn over the day-to-day operations of Baylor Health Care System to Joel Allison and our very experienced management team," Powell said. "I am pleased to say Joel is nationally recognized as one of the most competent health care administrators in the country. Joel has my complete confidence and support."
___"For more than two decades, Boone Powell Jr. has been one of the most influential and visionary health care leaders in the nation. We have been fortunate to have a leader of his stature and integrity," said Dale Jones, chairman of the system's trustees. "Joel is well-prepared for this new responsibility, and we have every confidence in his ability."
___Powell is noted for developing a health care system to link hospitals in a network of services. He formed Baylor Health Care System in 1981. The system, which includes a regional network of acute-care facilities, community hospitals, family health centers, senior health centers and contract affiliation facilities throughout North Texas and Southern Oklahoma, treats more than 800,000 patients each year.
___He is a graduate of Baylor University and the University of California.
___He was president and chief executive officer of Hendrick Medical Center, another Baptist facility, in Abilene from 1961 to 1980. In 1980, he became president of Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
___Powell was recognized by Business Week magazine in 1990 as one of the "five best health care executives" in the country.
___In 1999, Powell was appointed by Gov. George W. Bush to the Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Uninsured. He serves on the board of trustees of the National Young Life Organization and the board of directors of Abbott Laboratories. He also is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is past chairman of the Healthcare Leadership Council.
___Allison oversees operations of the nine-hospital system, as well as the development and implementation of system objectives and strategies. He is redesigning the system into an integrated health care delivery system.
___He is a graduate of Baylor University and Trinity University.
___He served on the administrative staff of Hendrick Medical Center for 10 years.
___Before coming to Baylor, he headed Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi, a public hospital in Amarillo and Methodist Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo.
___Allison is board chairman of the Health Careers Foundation, a national organization that raises funds for students pursuing a career in health care, and chairman of the board of Novation, a national health care supply management organization. He also is a member of the Buckner Retirement Services board of directors.
___Both Allison and Powell are members of Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas.
