Chicago blitz scaled back. A year after calling for 100,000 volunteers to spread Christianity in Chicago, Southern Baptist officials admit they set their sights too high. About 1,200 out-of-town volunteers have committed to coming to Chicago for a July 8 blitz that was supposed to climax the major evangelism effort. A similar number has promised to work in the city's suburbs, according to a story June 7 in the Chicago Tribune. Local Baptist officials said they planned to release at least 6,000 hotel rooms that had been booked for the event.

Gloer to Truett. Hulitt Gloer, a former Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary faculty member, has been named professor of preaching at Baylor University's Truett Theological Seminary. Gloer, a 1972 Baylor graduate, has been pastor of First Baptist Church in Corpus Christi since 1997. He has a doctorate in New Testament studies from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

Mohler for pope? If Southern Baptists had a pope, it would be Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., the Orlando Sentinel said June 12 in an article quoting Paige Patterson and Morris Chapman. "It is unfair to characterize Al Mohler as a pope. But it is fair to say that he is emerging as one of the most influential Southern Baptists," said Patterson, outgoing president of the Southern Baptist Convention. Chapman, president of the SBC Executive Committee, said Mohler "would certainly qualify" as pope if Baptists had one. "If Dr. Mohler lives a natural life span, I predict history will record him as this generation's Southern Baptist leader and theologian," Chapman added.

Internet prayer room launched. The Southern Baptist Convention has launched an online prayer room where individuals are invited to commit to spending 30 minutes weekly praying for revival. The address is www.sbcpray.net.

Two Texans tapped. Leland Crawford of First Baptist Church of Waskom and Edward Pauley of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano are the two Texans named to the Southern Baptist Convention committee on nominations. The committee nominates people to serve on the trustee boards governing SBC agencies and institutions.

BP head elected. Will Hall was elected unanimously as vice president of convention relations for the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee June 12. Hall, a retired naval officer, succeeds Herb Hollinger, who is retiring and moving to Lubbock. Among other duties, Hall will manage Baptist Press, the SBC's official news service.
