Baptist students use radio show to reach teens
___BELTON--Three students from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor are hosting a weekly radio show geared specifically for high school and college-age students.
___The program, "Catch the Night Fever on Powerline 89.9 with the Life Crew," airs each Saturday night from 7 to 11 p.m. The Christian station, KBDE serves Waco, Temple and Killeen.
___Farrah Davis of Lockhart, Sarah Klugh of Fargo, N.D., and Greg Weghorst of Lorena are the "Life Crew" and are all journalism majors volunteering their time to host the show.
___It is intended to appeal to young adults, Davis explained. "We are targeting our age group with music we like because we know they won't listen unless they like the beat.
___"It is up-beat, fast-paced and has a beat we know our generation enjoys."
___After just a few weeks on-air, the students have seen an increase in call-in requests for specific songs.
___"We are getting lots of requests each week and lots of feedback from both kids and adults on the program," Davis said. "It is so much fun.
___"We are also telling listeners about who we are," she said. "We call it 'DJs Disclosed,' and we each take a few minutes to talk about what's been going on in our lives so the listeners know us better."
___Music selections on the program range from dc Talk to Michele Tumes to Steven Curtis Chapman, in addition to Christian alternative groups such as Bleach, PAX217, Satellite Soul and Eli.
___KBDE Station Manager Bill Thrasher said response to the program is growing each week.
___"There is a tremendous need in Central Texas for young people to have Christian music, especially on the weekend when they are out cruising," he said.
___Currently the program airs only on Saturday nights, but Thrasher hopes it will expand to include a Friday program in the near future.
___The program is co-sponsored by KBDE and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
