Houston church 'adopts' 142 retired ministers

___HOUSTON--John Morgan is the son of a Baptist pastor and has a heart for pastors and their families across the Southern Baptist Convention. And what touches his heart most is the plight of retired ministers and widows who live near the poverty line.
___So, several years ago, Morgan decided to act on his concerns. He led Sagemont Baptist Church in Houston to reach out and minister to the needs of aged ministers and their widows living in the Houston area. The church began gathering the names of individuals with specific needs and responded by sending them $100 to $400 each month. The number grew to 13, and has over time grown to 142 with more on the horizon.

__NASHVILLE--The doctrines of soul competency and priesthood of all believers are not diminished because reference to them has been removed from the preamble to the Baptist Faith & Message, according to the committee that proposed changes to the statement of faith.

Summer projects will send 4,000 youth for inner-city evangelism

___Four thousand volunteers from throughout the state and beyond will share their faith in Texas' six largest cities this summer through Youth Inner-City Evangelism Projects.
___Last summer, more than 2,600 similar volunteers served with inner-city churches and others in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. Their efforts resulted in more than 600 professions of faith in Christ.

Texas CLC gets $100,000 grant

___DALLAS--The Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission soon will receive a $100,000 grant from the Beldon Fund for a broad-based creation stewardship project.
___At its April meeting, the New York-based philanthropic fund's board of trustees approved a "religion and environment" grant proposal from the moral concerns and public policy agency of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
